Dear Parent/Guardian,

The administration and staff of the Lurgio Middle School are excited to welcome the incoming seventh grade class. We are committed to building a successful two years for all our students, and that begins with the thoughtful and deliberate course registration process that you have already begun.

Attending middle school is a very important step as students develop their academic and organizational skills. At the middle level, students and parents begin to have additional options for course selection. The first area where students have significant choices is in Mathematics. Your child’s sixth grade teacher will make a recommendation about which course is the best fit. Please carefully consider these teacher recommendations, which will be available online on March 28, 2017, the same day you can register your child for classes. You can also use these helpful descriptions (click here) of students who are successful in each course when considering these options.

The second area of significant choice is between a World Language and Academic Support. Many students choose to take on the additional challenge of beginning a high school World Language in seventh grade, but others choose instead to focus on their study skills and executive functioning. Please consider these descriptions (click here) of students who are successful in the different courses to help you as you decide which course is right for your child.

Course selection is the primary driving factor in pod placement. Additionally, we work with the McKelvie leadership and guidance team to form pods that create successful learning environments for all our students. Because of the complexity of balancing scheduling with pod configuration, we are not able to honor specific teacher, pod, or friend requests. We are confident that each of our pods is fully capable of meeting your child’s needs, and all of our teachers look forward to watching your child thrive in the 7th grade.

Yearbook Order Time!


The 2016-2017 Lurgio Yearbook will be on sale Friday, March 24th until Friday, April 14th for $25*.

Cash or check orders will be collected in homeroom Monday, March 27 through Tuesday, April 4.  Order forms will be sent home with students on Friday, March 24.

Online orders can be placed Friday, March 24th through Friday, April 14.

To placed online orders:

  • Visit http://www.schoolannual.com
  • Click on the purple Parent's: Buy Your Student's Yearbook button in the upper right corner.
  • Search for Lurgio 
  • Enter Your Student's last name and select your student from the list.  If your student does not appear, follow the instructions on the screen to add them.
* A limited number of yearbooks might be available for sale when the books arrive in June for $30.

It's Midnight Madness Time Again!

Let the Madness begin! We need some (A LOT!) of volunteers to make this event a great success for all! This is one for the Dads, as well as the Moms. Click on this link to volunteer!

Friday, April 7 from 7:00pm - MIDNIGHT
There will be inflatable obstacles, a mechanical bull, large tricycles, movies, and lots of yummy treats! There are 2 shifts of volunteers needed: 6:30 - 9:30 pm or 9:00 - midnight. Volunteers will be supervising in the gym at the inflatables, at the bull, serving pizza and drinks, making cotton candy, popcorn and sno-cones. Have an area of expertise? Let us know! Torn between cotton candy and mechanical bull? We will rotate positions so you can supervise more than 1!!

And, while the hours of 7:00 - midnight are for the kids, I have it on good authority that the gym will open at 6:15 for volunteers to try out the fun.

​Music In Our Schools Benefit Concert - Thursday, March 23, 2017

The Music in Our Schools concert will be Thursday, March 23rd at 7pm in the BHS theater. It is our benefit concert and our suggested donation is $5 dollars. We will also be selling concessions before the concert and during intermission, and Jazz Band will be playing at Bulldog Corner from 6:30pm until the start of the concert. Our concert is projected to end before 8pm, making a great night to bring the whole family!

Our instrumental music includes selections from Star Wars and Harry Potter. Our Choral music follows a "Seize the Day!" theme including selections from Disney! All are welcome!


Science Professionals Wanted

Do you have a science career you want to share with students? We are looking for science professionals to run a workshop sharing their career experience with 7th grade students at our annual science career day on Friday, April 21 from 9-12.  As a guest speaker you will be asked to present to a small group of students for two rotations, each approximately 45 minutes in length. In the workshop you will provide an overview of your profession along with an activity or demonstration for the students using the tools or materials you typically work with. Come join us for a fun-filled day and get students excited about science!

Spring Sports Tryout Information

Please note the following tryout dates:

  • Baseball - Monday, March 27 in the Lurgio Gymnasium 3:30-5:15 p.m.

  • Softball - Monday, March 27 in the Lurgio Gymnasium 5:15-7:00 p.m.

  • Track & Field - Monday, April  3  at Preston Field 3:30-5:00 p.m.
    • Athletes should be picked-up at Lurgio at the conclusion of practice

  • Coed Golf - Tuesday, April 11 at Ponemah Green at 4:00 p.m.

  • Coed Tennis - Monday, April 10 at the courts on County Rd. 7:00-8:20 a.m.

Two Hour Delay - Thursday, March 16 - Lurgio & BHS ONLY

Due postponed town and school elections.  Lurgio Middle School and Bedford High School will have a two-hour delay on Thursday, March 16 to allow morning voters easier access to the polls.

ELECTIONS POSTPONED TO THURSDAY, MARCH 16

Dear Parents and Staff,
This is an update regarding the coming snow storm.
Due to anticipated weather conditions, our Bedford Town Moderator Brian Shaughnessy, Esq., has postponed tomorrow's town and school elections. The elections have been moved to Thursday, March 16, from 7am-7pm at Bedford High School. Full details about this decision are in this press release,

There are several key items for the school community.
  1. All schools will be open on Thursday
  2. Memorial, Peter Woodbury, Riddle Brook and McKelvie will have a normal schedule on Thursday
  3. Lurgio Middle School and Bedford High School will have a two-hour delay on Thursday to allow morning voters easier access to the polls. 
  4. For voters unable to vote on Thursday, the Town Offices will remain opne until 7p.m. this evening to allow for completion of absentee voting
  5. For our professional staff, I will send a separate message this evening regarding our workshop day scheduled for tomorrow.

Spring Sports Pre-Season Meeting Information

Baseball Meeting
There will be a meeting for all students who are trying out for the baseball team on Monday March 20, at 3:30 is Coach Stevener's room. Students should have rides for pick-up at 4:00.

Softball Meeting
All students interested in trying out for softball must attend an information pre-season meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at 3:30PM in room 116 (8th grade blue pod). If you have any questions, please see Mr. Demers in the Main Office.

Track & Field Meeting
Attention any student interested in participating in Track and Field. There will be an informational meeting in Mr. Gookin's room, room 141 in the 8th grade yellow pod, on Wednesday, March 22, from 3:15 - 3:45. Additional information can be found on the Lurgio Track and Field website.
